Army Film & Photographic Unit Living History Group

This the original home of the Army Film & Photographic Unit Living History Group, which Jeff and I had intended to house the full extent of our content. Eventually we aim to develop this site to host our collection what is now upwards of 1,000 photographs together with more detailed background information on the AFPU. Ultimately as a hobbyist it comes down to time! So bear with us on this one and we will at least for the time being put a link through to this site.

Uncut AFPU Footage from 26th June 1944

I could not believe my luck when I found this in amongst the Pathe News reels when looking for Normandy invasion footage. This looks like an uncut sequence of cine film shot by Sergeant Ian Grant of the Army Film & Photographic Unit on 26th June 1944! The sequence even includes one reel where Ian Grant has chalked his name, reel number and date on a stone. Pathe News note the sequence as being British and Canadian troops. However, in Ian Grant's book 'Cameraman at War'; he notes that the sequence was part of the Odon Offensive with the 11th Armoured Brigade and the attack on the village of Cheux in support of the 15th Scottish Divsion. Unfortunately Pathe News charge nearly £600 for a web publishing copy so you will have to download the free preview version for yourself.

Forgotten Tommies Living History Group

Forgotten Tommies is an association of Militaria collectors, historians and hobbyists. Their prime aim is to preserve and display equipment and weapons of the Second World War, with specific emphasis on the war in the far east, particularly the campaign in Burma, and to remember the people involved in the conflict by accurately portraying them in living history displays, supporting veterans events, and in ‘first person’ impressions at educational events.
